What is “% of one cigarette”?This app converts AQI readings into cigarette equivalents so that you can know how much air pollution you are breathing compared to cigarettes. For example, an AQI reading of 200 is 23% of one cigarette. If you breathe AQI 200 air for 24 hours, in terms of the amount of PM2.5 particles, it is the same as smoking 23% of one cigarette. This app maps this cigarette equivalent onto images of cats to communicate the air quality in a fun and engaging way. If the air is clean, the cats will be happy. If the air is highly polluted, the cats will be smoking, or worse!About this app and the founderI am a student in grade 8 living in Shanghai. I often heard my parents, teachers and school mates talking about air pollution and AQI when a thought struck me. What does ‘AQI 200’ mean in real life? How bad is that, really? To solve this problem my idea is to build this app that converts and expresses AQI readings into cigarette equivalents. Breathing 23% of one cigarette is more meaningful to me than AQI 200 and I hope this app is meaningful to you too! If you like it, please share it to Weixin Moments.
